Selecting the Perfect Sled for Snowkiting Adventures in Greenland

In May 2025, 6 women including myself will be crossing the Greenland Ice Sheet using our kites and hauling enough gear to last us 45 days on the ice.  Over the next year, we will be training hard and learning the extra skills needed for this epic adventure.  Follow us changerising.org or @change_rising on instagram.

This week, I am sharing what we are learning about the different sleds available and what to take into consideration when choosing the right one for your mission.

Camilla Ringvold - Our Greenland Guide has recommended the Paris Pulk which is the orange one in the photo.  We will need to bring 2 spares each because in the cold weather and bumpy conditions, they can have a tendency to crack.

Exploring the Icy Terrain with the Right Gear

Greenland's vast and icy terrain offers an exhilarating playground for snowkiting enthusiasts. But to truly embrace this adventure, choosing the right sled is crucial. In this blog, we will guide you through the essentials of selecting a sled that not only enhances your snowkiting experience but also ensures safety and efficiency in Greenland's challenging landscapes.

Understanding Your Needs

Before diving into the world of sleds, assess your specific requirements. Consider the nature of your journey, the type and amount of gear you'll be carrying, and your personal skill level. Are you planning a multi-day expedition or a short day trip? Answering these questions will help you narrow down your choices.

Types of Sleds: Pulk vs Traditional Sleds

In snowkiting, two main types of sleds are used: the traditional sled and the pulk. While traditional sleds are more common globally, pulks are specifically designed for snowy terrains like those in Greenland. They are low to the ground, offering better stability and less wind resistance – a key factor in snowkiting.

Material Matters

The material of your sled plays a significant role in performance. Look for lightweight yet durable options. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a popular choice, known for its resilience against harsh weather conditions and its ability to glide smoothly over snow.

Size and Weight

The size of your sled should align with your expedition needs. For longer trips, a larger sled is necessary to carry more supplies. However, remember that a bigger sled can be more challenging to maneuver, especially for beginners. Similarly, keep the weight in mind – the lighter the sled, the easier it is to handle, particularly when the wind is not in your favor.

Harnessing System

A critical aspect of a sled for snowkiting is its harnessing system. Look for a harness that provides comfort, flexibility, and control. It should allow for easy movement while ensuring the sled stays securely attached. Adjustable harnesses offer the benefit of customizing the fit according to your body type and the layers of clothing you wear.

Safety Features

Safety cannot be overlooked. Opt for sleds with reflective elements for visibility in low-light conditions. Also, consider sleds with emergency release systems that allow you to detach from the sled quickly if needed.

Testing and Reviews

Before making a purchase, read reviews and, if possible, test different sleds. Experiences of other snowkiters can provide valuable insights into the performance and durability of various sleds in real-world conditions.

Conclusion

Choosing the right sled for your snowkiting adventure in Greenland is a blend of personal preference, practicality, and safety. With the right sled, you’ll be able to enjoy the thrilling experience of gliding over Greenland's snowscapes with confidence and ease. Remember, the key is to find a balance between comfort, functionality, and safety. Happy snowkiting!
