Hiking is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of every age and athletic ability. It offers the opportunity to explore new areas, see beautiful sights, and experience the world around us in a way that is often overlooked in this age of fast-paced living. If you are planning a hiking trip then there are several things to keep in mind.
- Check your equipment. If you are new to the hiking adventure then basic hiking needs include sturdy but broken in hiking shoes, a bandana (has a plethora of uses), thick absorbent socks, lightweight clothing that can be worn in layers, a canteen, and a lightweight backpack. Your backpack should contain a basic first aid kit, bedroll or sleeping bag, snacks/meal, and cooking items, extra pair(s)of socks, sunscreen, a whistle, a pocket knife, trail map or GPS, toilet paper (remember if you pack it in, then pack it out), a whistle, a plastic zip-top back and a garbage bag, some water purification tablets or filter, and waterproof matches are just some of the basics.
- Take a friend along. Not only will this provide you with someone to share the experience with, but in the case of an emergency, you will have someone to help out. Be sure to share trip planning and packing responsibilities so that preparation and backpacking loads are evenly distributed. In addition, if you are new to hiking, consider asking a friend who is more experienced as it will help you become a better hiker.
- Be sure to check the weather. You don't want to get caught in a rainstorm or snow. However, you might want to keep a lightweight raincoat in your backpack for the sudden mountain rain showers, just to be prepared. In addition, remember that the higher the elevation the cooler the temperature-make sure to have the necessary clothing.
- Be familiar with the terrain you will be hiking. This is best done by studying a topographical map of the region. However, if you want a more personal description of a hiking region, check out the hiking blog. A hiking blog will provide personal stories from hikers all over the world. You can ask questions, leave comments, and make many friends who all share a common interest.
Hiking is a great way to enjoy and explore nature. It offers a chance to get away from the business of daily life and reconnect with the world around you. So grab your hiking gear, check out a hiking blog and get ready to have some fun.
